Edmonton Oilers Bio Data :

The Edmonton Oilers are a Canadian professional ice hockey team based in Edmonton, Alberta, that participates in the National Hockey League’s Western Conference. The Oilers won their first Stanley Cup in 1996. The Edmonton Oilers are a member of the Western Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL).

A young franchise, the Edmonton Oilers have achieved significant success largely because of the talents of Hall of Fame center Wayne Gretzky, who is widely recognized as the greatest hockey player of all time. The Edmonton Oilers have won five Stanley Cups and seven conference championships to their credit over their illustrious career.

Edmonton Oilers’ purchase of Wayne Gretzky from the financially troubled Indianapolis Racing team in 1978 created the framework for their dominance in the NHL during the decade of the 1980s. When the World Hockey Association folded in 1979, the Edmonton Oilers were one of four WHA teams that made the jump to the National Hockey League.

When the Edmonton Oilers joined the NHL, they made an immediate impact, qualifying for the Stanley Cup Playoffs in their first season. After reaching the Stanley Cup finals in the 1982–83 season, the Edmonton Oilers were led by the play of Wayne Gretzky and a talented group of players that included future Hall of Famers Mark Messier, Glen Anderson, Jari Kurri, and Paul Coffey, among others.

Gretzky was named to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1993. Then won their first Stanley Cup the next season, and they repeated the feat the following season, in 1984–85, to claim their second Stanley Cup. It was 1986–87 and 1987–88 that the Edmonton Oilers won back-to-back Stanley Cups, which extended their winning streak to six games. The Edmonton Oilers shocked the hockey world by trading national icon Wayne Gretzky to the Los Angeles Kings at the conclusion of the 1987–88 season in exchange for a second-round drafting pick.

During the 1989–90 season, Messier guided the Oilers to their second Stanley Cup, demonstrating that the team could be successful even in the absence of Gretzky’s leadership. It was during the following several seasons that the champion Oilers squad began to crumble, with Messier’s trade to the New York Rangers in 1991 being the most significant departure. Despite experiencing moments of failure and success throughout the 1990s, the Edmonton Oilers were unable to reclaim their prior standing as a top team during that time period.

The Edmonton Oilers’ postseason journey in 2005–06 was highlighted by a series of upset victories as they advanced to the Stanley Cup finals before losing to the Carolina Hurricanes in a thrilling seventh game in the series finale. When the Oilers entered the playoffs, they were the eighth-seeded team in the Western Conference and the lowest seed overall.

A lengthy period of futility followed, with the Oilers finishing in last or second-to-last place in their division in each season during a playoff drought that stretched to a club-record five years in 2010–11 when they were eliminated from the playoffs. One bright spot in the club’s comeback was that it was selected with three consecutive first-round picks in NHL draughts from 2010 to 2012, providing a consolation prize for its perseverance.

The addition of young talent, on the other hand, did not have an instant impact on Edmonton, which continued its trend of missing the postseason into the most recent season. In the 2016–17 season, the Edmonton Oilers finally broke through, winning 47 games, the most victories for the organization since the 1986–87 season, mainly to the outstanding play of center Connor McDavid, who was selected first overall in the 2015 NHL Draft.

McDavid, the first overall choice in the 2015 NHL Draft, was named to the All-Star squad. The Edmonton Oilers’ surprise season came to an end on Saturday night after a seven-game second-round postseason series against the Anaheim Ducks was completed. With a losing record and failure to qualify for the post-season competition, the Edmonton Oilers slipped further back in the standings in 2017–18.
