Diane Sawyer Biography and Wiki:

Diane is the younger of the two children that her mother, Jean W. (née Dunagan), and her husband, Erbon Powers “Tom” Sawyer, had. She was born on December 22, 1945 in Glasgow, Kentucky. While her mother was an educator at the elementary school level, her father served as a captain in the United States Navy during World War II. Her older sister’s name is Linda. Her ancestors are from all over Europe; she has English, Irish, Scottish, and German blood running through her veins, reflecting the cultural melting pot that is the United States of America. When she was just a few months old, her family relocated to Louisville, where her father immediately established himself as a prominent member of the town through his political and leadership roles within the Republican party. In 1969, when he was killed in an automobile accident, he was working as the Judge and Executive for Jefferson County in Kentucky. He passed away at that time.

Sawyer was a very involved student while she attended Seneca High School in Louisville. She served as the editor-in-chief of the school newspaper, which was called “The Arrow,” and she participated in a variety of artistic endeavours. She entered and competed in the annual national America’s Junior Miss scholarship pageant in the year 1963, representing the Commonwealth of Kentucky. She was able to win the pageant by displaying her elegance and by composing an essay in which she compared the music that was popular in the north and the south during the time of the Civil War. Between the years 1962 and 1965, she held the title of America’s Junior Miss, and during that time she travelled the country to promote the Coca-Cola Pavilion at the New York World’s Fair in 1964 and 1965. Because she had such an immensely positive experience with the programme, she continues to advocate for it even to this day.

Sawyer received his Bachelor of Arts in English from Wellesley College, which is located in Wellesley, Massachusetts. He graduated with this degree in 1967. During her time at Wellesley College, she participated in both the a cappella singing ensemble known as the Wellesley College Blue Notes and the Phi Sigma Lecture Society. She attended the University of Louisville’s School of Law for one semester before deciding to pursue a career in journalism instead of continuing her education there. Diane Sawyer was hired as a weather forecaster shortly after she graduated from college, but she quickly became dissatisfied with the work because she found it to be dull. Her promotion to the post of general assignment did not help, so she moved to Washington, District of Columbia, in the hopes of finding better job chances there.

She decided to transfer careers and apply for jobs in government offices after discovering that there were none available, at least not in the broadcasting industry. She participated in a number of interviews and wound up working as Jerry Warren’s assistant in the end. It didn’t take long for her to work her way up the ranks and become President Nixon’s staff assistant. In 1973, Sawyer was tasked, along with Larry Speakes, with demonstrating that former White House Counsel John Dean’s testimony before the Senate Watergate Committee regarding Nixon’s involvement in the Watergate cover-up was a lie. Dean had testified that Nixon was involved in the cover-up. Sawyer and Speakes were given this assignment. She would continue to diligently serve Nixon until his resignation and the subsequent transition period between the Nixon and Ford administrations.

She assisted him in preparing for his well-known series of interviews with David Frost and in writing ‘RN: The Memoirs of Richard Nixon.’ After moving back to Washington, D.C. in 1978 and beginning a career in broadcast journalism, she first worked for CBS News as a general-assignment reporter and, later, as a co-anchor of a morning news show that lasted for ninety minutes. The first episode of the programme aired on September 28th, 1981. She was the first female correspondent for the investigative television newsmagazine ’60 Minutes,’ which is broadcast by CBS News. She began working for the programme in 1984 and remained there for a total of five years. During the time that she worked there, the show was consistently ranked among the most popular television programmes in the United States. She began her career at ABC News in 1989, working alongside Sam Donaldson as the co-anchor for the programme “Primetime Live.” From 1998 to 2000, she was also a co-host on the show “20/20.”

On January 18, 1999, she and Charles Gibson became the hosts of the morning show ‘Good Morning America.’ What was supposed to be a short-term position transformed into a permanent position that lasted for eleven years. She was the first anchor to report to her audience in September 2001 about the first jet hitting the World Trade Center, and she did it for the first time. She made her debut on ‘ABC World News,’ the main show of the channel, on December 21, 2009, where she focused more on “news you can use” than on hard international news in her first week of hosting the programme. Under her leadership, the show attracted the attention of sixty percent of female viewers. ABC News issued a statement on June 25, 2014, saying that Sawyer would step down as the weekday host of the programme, and that David Murr, the anchor of the programme on the weekends, would replace her in that role. She made the decision to resign in August, approximately one week prior to the beginning of Murr’s tenure on August 27. Since then, she has continued to work at ABC News, where she produces ground-breaking specials and is responsible for conducting interviews.
