James Dennis Alan is a professional US stock car racer and team owner of NASCAR. Hamlin was born in Tampa, Florida, and lived most of his childhood in Chesterfield, Virginia. At the age of seven, he started racing go-karts. He subsequently worked towards Late Models in 2004 and signed a development agreement with Joe Gibbs Racing.
After a brief time at the Craftsman Truck Series, Hamlin took part in the whole 2005 Busch Series season with a few Nextel Cup races. After a strong race, Hamlin was on a full-time JGR ride. His strongest season was in 2010 when he led the championship by 15 points into Homestead’s final race.
Hamlin competed in the NASCAR Cup Series in all seasons (14 seasons in 2020) including his rookie season in 2006, taking third place in the NASCAR Nextel Cup rankings, cutting off 1 at the end of his 2013 season, and keeping him out of the way for a large part of the early season.
Career
In 1988, at the age of seven, Hamlin started his running career. By 1997, aged 15, he won the WKA cup. He raced mini stocks at the age of 16. In his first stock car race, Hamlin won the pole position at Langley Speedway and won the race. In 1998, he moved to the Grand Stock Division and in 2000 to Late Model Stock Cars.
In 2002, he won 10 Late Model races and in 2003, won 25 victories and 30 pole races in 36 races. Hamlin signed a driver development contract with Joe Gibbs Racing in 2004 during the full-time competition in Late Model Stock Cars.
Hamlin was competing with EJP Racing in five NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series races in 2004 and finished ninth on his NASCAR debut at Indianapolis Raceway Park. He then ran his first ARCA RE/MAX Series race at the Talladega Superspeedway and finished third in Andy Hillenburg’s No.10 Pontiac.
His last beginning of the year came when he debuted in the Busch Series at Darlington Raceway. He began 27th (rain-out) but finished 8th in 18th Joe Gibbs Driven Performance Oil Chevrolet. On 3 August 2009, Hamlin won his fifth Cup career race at Pocono Raceway. At the final restart, Hamlin boldly stated “I will win this race.” He followed the statement, moved from sixth to first, and snapped a 50 race without winning streak.
The win in Pocono was Hamlin’s third. It was particularly difficult for Team No. 11 as Hamlin buried her grandma Thelma Clark on Friday. Hamlin had great expectations for the 2010 season. Many believed that he would be Jimmie Johnson’s favorite champion of the Sprint Cup.
On January 22, 2010, when Hamlin played basketball, Hamlin tore the previous ligament in his left knee. It was decided to postpone his operation until after the season. On 27 March 2010, Hamlin stated that he would have surgery on his left knee the next Monday.

Joe Gibbs Racing announced that for the 2012 season Mike Ford will be replaced by Darian Grubb as crew leader of Hamlin. Grubb previously served as crew chief for Tony Stewart, who helped Stewart with his third title in the 2011 Sprint Cup.
Hamlin began the season with his cars crashing in both the Unlimited Sprint and the Dueling of Budweiser. The crash in the Duel put him in the Daytona 500’s backup car. The 2014 season started strongly with winning the pole and leading all three phases of the Sprint Unlimited, which finally won the race.
The 2019 season started with a 47-race winless series breaking with his second Daytona 500 win, his first Cup Series win for new crew leader Chris Gabehart and his victory for late J. D. Gibbs. In 2020, Hamlin won his third 500 Daytona, beating Ryan Blaney with 0,014 seconds in overtime, the race’s second-closest ending behind Hamlin’s 2016 victory. On 5 September 2021 Hamlin won the Southern 500 for the third time in his career at Darlington and advanced to the 12th Playoff Round.
