Dana Welles Delany was born in New York City on March 13, 1956, and raised in Stamford, Connecticut. Dana then went on to cinema, ultimately landing leading roles in films like Tombstone. Dana is one of Hollywood’s busiest stars, having worked on over a dozen TV and film productions in the last few years.

Career

She found acting roles in daytime soap operas such as Love of Life and As the World Turns after college, and supported herself by appearing in ads such as those for Wisk laundry detergent. She appeared on Broadway in A Life and received critical acclaim off-Broadway in Nicholas Kazan’s Blood Moon in 1983, where The New York Times praised her “skillful verisimilitude” in a tough part that required two roles, “and she does them both with authority.” Delany relocated to Hollywood and worked as a guest star on TV shows such as Moonlighting, Magnum, P.I., and Thirtysomething over the next few years.

Delany failed her first audition for the lead role of nurse Colleen McMurphy. “They didn’t think I was cute enough,” she said in an interview. After the producers lost their first pick, she turned up at her next audition with her “tall tresses trimmed into a bob” and won the part (she had cut her hair at the request of director Paul Schrader who had cast her in the film Patty Hearst). From 1988 to 1991, China Beach was a weekly television show that drew a lot of exposure to the star. This part was nominated for two Primetime Emmy Awards, as well as two other Primetime Emmy Awards and two Golden Globe Awards. In 1991, the programme came to an end after four seasons.
