Dallas Stars Bio Data :

In the National Hockey League, the Dallas Stars are an American professional ice hockey team headquartered in Dallas, Texas, that competes in the Western Conference (NHL). The franchise has made it to the Stanley Cup finals five times (1981, 1991, 1999, 2000, and 2020), and it has won one Stanley Cup in that time period (1999). The Minnesota North Stars were established in 1967 and were situated in Bloomington, Minnesota, a suburb of Minneapolis when the club first began competing.

In spite of finishing with a losing record, the North Stars were able to qualify for the postseason, where they went on to win their first-round series. The season was also marked by sadness, as center Bill Masterton became the first NHL player to die as a result of an injury incurred during a game; he died after hitting his head on the ice while playing without a helmet during a game against the New York Rangers in January 1968.

The Minnesota North Stars, led by right-wing Bill Goldsworthy, qualified for the playoffs for four consecutive seasons from 1969–70 to 1972–73, but the team went on a six-season losing run beginning in 1973. The team was in grave financial problems by the late 1970s and was sold to the owners of another struggling NHL franchise, the Cleveland Barons, in 1978, when the team was sold to them. As a result of this one-of-a-kind agreement, the two teams were united and became known as the North Stars going forward.

Minnesota had five more seasons between 1981–82 and 1985–86 in which it qualified for the playoffs but failed to move further than the conference finals, thanks to the efforts of right-wing Dino Ciccarelli and center Neal Broten. Following that, the team suffered through seven consecutive losing seasons, during which it made it to the postseason on four separate occasions.

The North Stars have fallen in the first round in each of their previous postseason appearances, with the exception of the 1990–91 postseason. On their way to the Stanley Cup finals, the North Stars (which included Broten and left-wing Brian Bellows) defeated the Chicago Blackhawks and St. Louis Blues, who had the best regular-season records in the NHL that season, as well as the defending champion Edmonton Oilers, before falling to the Pittsburgh Penguins in the finals of the Western Conference finals.

MN’s unexpected run to the finals was overshadowed by financial troubles arising from the team’s prolonged run of poor results on the field and in the postseason. After the club’s owner, Norm Green, was unable to negotiate a contract to build an arena in his hometown, he decided to relocate the franchise to Dallas.

After dropping the “North” from their name, the Stars enjoyed a modest amount of success in their first few seasons in Texas before capturing five straight division titles between 1996–97 and 2000–01 to claim the franchise’s first championship. During the regular season of 1998–99, the Dallas Stars were led to the best record in the NHL by center Mike Modano, the franchise’s all-time leading scorer, and goaltender Ed Belfour. After defeating the Buffalo Sabres in a six-game Stanley Cup final, the Stars won the franchise’s first championship.

The following season, the Stars advanced to the Stanley Cup finals, where they were defeated by the New Jersey Devils. Once eliminated from the playoffs in 2001–02, the team recovered to qualify for the postseason each of the following seasons between 2002–03 and 2007–08, getting to the conference finals in the latter season (a loss to the eventual champion Detroit Red Wings). Once this happened, the Stars went on a postseason-free drought that lasted for a franchise-record four years, culminating in the 2011–12 season. In 2013–14, the Mavericks returned to the postseason, where they were eliminated in the first round.

Although they improved in 2016–17, the Stars relapsed, finishing sixth in the divisional standings, prompting a coaching change in the off-season. This past season, Dallas made their first-ever postseason appearance, winning the first-round upset before falling in the second round to the Los Angeles Clippers. This season, the Stars advanced to the postseason for the second consecutive season, when they won three series to claim the Western Conference championship. The Dallas Stars were then defeated by the Tampa Bay Lightning in the Stanley Cup finals, which lasted six games.
