Curtis Sliwa Biography and Wiki:

Curtis Sliwa is an American activist, radio talk show host, and the founder and chief executive officer of the Guardian Angels, a nonprofit organisation for the prevention of unarmed crime. He was born on March 26, 1954, and his name is pronounced. Sliwa was the Republican nominee for the mayoral election in New York City in 2021, but he lost to Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams. Adams went on to become the mayor of New York City. Canarsie, Brooklyn was the location of Curtis Sliwa’s birth on March 26, 195. He was born into a Catholic household that was of Polish and Italian origin. He is the brother of two sisters. He received his high school diploma from Canarsie High School, after having previously attended Brooklyn Prep, a Jesuit high school from which he was subsequently expelled. When he was younger, he worked as a delivery boy for the Daily News. After rescuing many people from a burning building while he was on his paper route, the newspaper presented him with the title of “Newsboy of the Year” and gave him a trip to the White House as a reward for his bravery.

In the years before he established the Guardian Angels, he worked as the night manager of a McDonald’s restaurant in the Bronx located on Fordham Road. Sliwa established the “Magnificent 13” in May of 1977. This was a civilian group with the mission of reducing the amount of violence and crime on the New York City Subway. At the time, the city was in the midst of a spate of criminal activity. In 1979, as a result of the group’s expansion, they were given the new name the Guardian Angels. Strong reactions, both positive and negative, were elicited by the acts taken by the group. An examination of the membership of the Guardian Angels revealed that over eighty percent of them were of either black or Hispanic descent. Since the members of the organisation were not permitted to carry weapons, they were first forced to complete karate classes and satisfy the legal prerequisites for citizens’ arrest before they could be deployed.  The crimson beret that Sliwa wears is a part of the Guardian Angels’ standard uniform.

An investigation of the Guardian Angels was initiated by Mayor Ed Koch, a critic of both Sliwa and the organisation. According to The Washington Post, the results of the investigation were “so positive that the Guardian Angels will soon be accorded some type of official status. A rare early backer of the organisation was Mario Cuomo, who served as the then-Lieutenant Governor of New York. Mario Cuomo was cited as remarking that “they are a better manifestation of morality than our city deserves.” Sliwa revealed in 1992 that he and The Guardian Angels staged heroic rescues in the subway for the purpose of gaining notoriety. He also stated that he had given incorrect information regarding his kidnapping, saying that he was taken by three off-duty transit police officers.

[19] Sliwa asserted that the killing of Melvin, an African American, was racially motivated, and that it had been done by a white officer who was being protected by the police department, rather than by the Hispanic officer who was identified as the shooter. The Hispanic officer had been identified as the perpetrator of the shooting Both cops were exonerated by a grand jury in Essex County following an investigation into Melvin’s death. Sliwa was kidnapped and murdered by two armed men on June 19, 1992, shortly after entering a cab that had been taken in Manhattan. Sliwa was picked up by the cab close to his residence in the East Village. Suddenly, a shooter who had been hidden in the front passenger seat leapt out and opened fire, striking Sliwa in the groyne and both legs. The attempt to kidnap Sliwa was unsuccessful because she was able to escape by climbing out of the front window of the moving vehicle. Sliwa had surgery to treat her internal ailments as well as the lesions on her legs.

He moved his activities to Buffalo in the early 1980s and was frequently critical of the local police department’s policies and procedures during this time. In one of the incidents, a member of the Guardian Angels named Frank Melvin was fatally shot by a Newark police officer in December 1981. The officer claimed that they fatally shot Melvin because they mistook the unzipping of Melvin’s jacket so that he could display the Guardian Angels emblem for a threat.  Sliwa asserted that the killing of Melvin, an African American, was racially motivated, and that it had been done by a white officer who was being protected by the police department, rather than by the Hispanic officer who was identified as the shooter. The Hispanic officer had been identified as the perpetrator of the shooting.

Both cops were exonerated by a grand jury in Essex County following an investigation into Melvin’s death.  Sliwa was kidnapped and murdered by two armed men on June 19, 1992, shortly after entering a cab that had been taken in Manhattan. Michael Yannotti, a Gotti accomplice, was also accused of shooting Sliwa in connection with the event but was found not guilty. Despite this, Yannotti was found guilty of racketeering and received a sentence of twenty years in prison.  Despite this, Manhattan Federal Judge Shira Scheindlin stated that the evidence pointed to Yannotti being the perpetrator of the shooting. Sliwa has been a radio broadcaster for the past three decades, spending the majority of his career on WABC-AM, the station where he got his start in the industry back in 1990. After Sliwa was let go from WABC in 1994, he was employed by WNYC, which at the time was owned and controlled by the city. Some people, including Sliwa[26], have speculated that the newly-elected Mayor Rudy Giuliani, whom he had supported in the 1993 mayoral contest, provided him with access to the station after he was sworn into office.

Curtis Sliwa Phone Number, Email, Contact Information, House Address, and Social Profiles:

Sliwa now does a radio discussion programme for a populist and conservative radio station. Since 1996, he has been the host of a variety of radio shows on WABC. In the year 2000, he began his role as co-host of the long-running radio programme Curtis and Kuby in the Morning alongside attorney Ron Kuby. After eight years, Citadel Broadcasting decided to replace the original team with Don Imus and cancel the show. Together with his longstanding broadcast partner, attorney Ron Kuby, he presented numerous times in the past the “Curtis & Kuby” weekday radio show at noon on WABC-AM in New York City. The show was broadcasted in New York City.  Eboni Williams, an attorney and television pundit, began working as a co-host for Sliwa beginning in June of 2017. His most recent co-host, Juliet Huddy, came on board in February 2019 and has been with the show since then.

On December 1, 2008, the Curtis Sliwa LIVE programme became available through nationwide syndication. WABC continued to employ Sliwa until November 2009, when, as a result of a disagreement regarding the contract, his show was terminated. After hosting the morning and evening “drive time” shows on WNYM-AM 970, Sliwa went back to WABC on January 2, 2014, taking over for Rush Limbaugh, who had relocated to WOR-AM. Sliwa replaced Limbaugh after Limbaugh left WABC for WOR-AM. [36] A lawyer from the Bronx filed a complaint against Sliwa before Sliwa ran for mayor, stating that Sliwa was breaking campaign regulations by promoting his mayoral candidacy on his show. The complaint was filed before Sliwa ran for mayor. Sliwa stated that he was contemplating leaving his show, but that he would not make a decision until after he collected sufficient signatures to be included on the ballot for the Republican primary.

Following the official announcement of Sliwa’s candidacy for president in March 2021, his radio programme was put on indefinite hold. In the late 1970s, New York City was akin to a contemporary version of the Wild West. It was commonplace for there to be murder and other violent crimes. A lesson in how to make it in the city could be learned from a ride on the subway. The citizens of the city eventually came to terms with the fact that the politicians and police appeared helpless in the face of the situation. Nevertheless, a young guy from Brooklyn who had been educated in the Jesuits came to the conclusion that action needed to be taken. As a result, he moved into position. He was aware that the city he had spent his entire life in and the city that he cherished both deserved more. Therefore, Curtis Sliwa took action. What began out as him and a dozen other devoted volunteers riding the subways of New York City to serve as defenders of regular law abiding citizens has grown into the “Guardian Angels” that residents of the Big Apple have come to know and love.
