Costa Rica National Football Team Bio Data :

The national football team of Costa Rica represents Costa Rica in international men’s football. The Costa Rican Football Federation (FEDEFUTBOL), the regulatory body in Costa Rica, administers the national team. Since 1927, it has been a member of the FIFA, the Confederation of North, Central American, and Caribbean Associations (CONCACAF) since 1961 and has been a member of the Central American Union of Football (UNCAF) since 1990.

The national squad made its debut with their first match 7-0 against El Salvador in the Independence Centennial Games that took place in Guatemala City in September 1921. Costa Rica finally trounced Guatemala 6–0 to take the trophy. The Costa Rican team gained the nickname “The Gold Shorties” in the late 1940s. [quote required] During the ’50s and ’60s, they became CONCACAF’s second strongest team behind Mexico, finishing in 1958, 1962 and 1966 World Cup qualifiers.

In the period Ruben Jimenez, Errol Daniels, Leonel Hernandez, and Edgar Marin were the main stars. However, Costa Rica could not make use of this edge, and so could not reach any World Cup that decade. At the end of the 1960s, their fortunes deteriorated with prominence in Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Haiti, Trinidad & Tobago, and Canada. Costa Rica failed to qualify for any of the 1970s and 1980s World Cups and only qualified in 1986 for the final round of CONCACAF.

Career

Two consecutive Olympic Summer Games, Moscow 1980 and Los Angeles 1984, were held. Costa Rica competed in Group D in 1980, 3–2, 3–0, and 3–0 respectively, against Yugoslavia, Finland and Iraq. In Los Angeles, Ticos lost 3-0 against the US, and 4–1 against Egypt, while a powerful team of Italy beat 1-0 for the midfielder Enrique Rivers included Walter Zenga, Pietro Vierchowod, Franco Baresi, and Aldo Serena.

The team that played against Scotland at the 1990 Italy World Cup Costa Rica won for the first time the 1989 CONCACAF Championship to qualify for the World Cup finals. In the first round of qualifications, after a 2-0 victory in the second leg, they defeated Panama in aggregate 3–1, aimed at Juan Arnoldo Cayasso and Hernán Medford. They were pulled out of the second round against Mexico but progressed automatically when their opponents were disqualified to tamper with the age of young players.

The final qualifying group stage began in Costa Rica with a home victory and a long default against both Guatemala and the United States. They drew 1-1 with Trinidad and Tobago and subsequently struck the same rival 1-0 at home with Cayasso as their goal. They earned a significant 4-2 win against El Salvador at the Cuscatlán stadium, with Carlos Mario Hidalgo, Cayasso and Leonidas Flores goals, and then defeated El Salvador 1-0 in San José, with a Pastor Fernández goal. They finished first at the group table, ahead of the USA on the gap.

In Costa Rican history, Italy 1990 or Italy 90 is considered a significant milestone. In particular, players are notorious for being mainly non-professional, as most players had other professions and didn’t live football. Due to the team’s success during the World Cup, many members of the team were successful in Costa Rican soccer (and international, in the case of Conejo) The Ticos won the 2002 World Cup qualification in South Korea and Japan.

The Brazilian, Gílson Nunes, and afterward the naturalized Brazilian, Alexandre Guimarães, managed Costa Rica throughout the qualifications. The first group stage started with a surprising 2-1 defeat against Barbados. Following that humiliation, Costa Rica beat the United States 2-1 with goals of Rolando Fonseca and Hernán Medford on Ricardo Saprissa Stadium.

Then they won Guatemala 2-1 at the Alejandro Morera Soto Stadium with two goals at Ricardo Saprissa, Paulo Wanchope, and Barbados 3-0 and Jafet Soto, Fonseca, and Medford. Costa Rica was forced into a play-off against Guatemala in Miami after a draw against the United States and a 2-1 defeat on Guatemala. With two Fonseca goals, and one Wanchope, Reynaldo Parks, and Jafeth Soto, Costa Rica won 5–2.

Costa Rica was again able to qualify for the 2006 World Cup finals, although its American coach Steve Sampson was facing difficulties after requiring the goals to defeat Cuba in the preliminary phase. The Colombian Jorge Luis Pinto took over the next round, which began with a catastrophic 5-2 home default on Honduras and a 2-1 loss in Guatemala.

When Wanchope scored a hat trick, and Carlos Hernández and Fonseca added further goals Costa Rica recovered with two wins over Canada and a spectacular 5-0 victory over Guatemala. By winning the group, Costa Rica advanced to the hexagonal stage. Costa Rica began the 2010 Grenada World Cup campaign, winning 5-2 in aggregate (2-2, 3-0).

In the next step, they won six games against El Salvador (1–0, 3–1), Haiti (3–1, 2–0), and Suriname (7–0, 4–1). The qualification of Ticos for the 2018 World Cup began with a bye to the fourth round, where they won five games and won one. In the final round, they finished second automatically behind Mexico, winning four matches and losing four.
