Columbus Blue Jackets Bio Data :

The Columbus Blue Jackets are an American professional ice hockey team headquartered in Columbus, Ohio, that competes in the National Hockey League’s Eastern Conference (NHL). The Columbus Blue Jackets were one of two expansion teams to join the NHL in 2000, joining the Minnesota Wild.

The nickname of the franchise, which was chosen through a name-the-team contest, pays honor to the many Ohioans who served in the Union army during the American Civil War, as well as to the fact that many of the uniforms worn by that army were manufactured in Columbus. The Blue Jackets’ first three seasons culminated in last-place divisional finishes in the Eastern Conference.

A very memorable moment occurred in 2002 when the team selected left wing Rick Nash, who would go on to become an NHL All-Star, with the first overall selection in the NHL draught. Because of Nash’s contributions, the Flyers were able to escape their divisional cellar in 2003–04, and the team qualified for its first postseason appearance (which ended in a first-round loss to the Detroit Red Wings) during the 2008–09 campaign. Following that first-round trip in the playoffs, succeeding Blue Jackets teams fell into the lower ranks of the NHL.

After the 2012–13 season, Columbus was reassigned from the Western Conference to the Eastern Conference as part of the NHL’s restructuring. The team qualified for the playoffs in its first season as a member of the Eastern Conference, where it won the first two postseason games in franchise history before falling to the Pittsburgh Penguins in the first round of the playoffs. Afterward, the team spent two seasons without qualifying for the postseason before scoring a franchise-record 108 points in 2016–17.

In contrast, the Blue Jackets were victorious in just one playoff game before being eliminated by the Penguins once more. The Blue Jackets were the lowest-seeded team in the Eastern Conference playoff field in 2018–19, and they faced a juggernaut Tampa Bay Lightning squad that had tied an NHL record for victories during the regular season in their first-round meeting. A remarkable upset occurred when the Blue Jackets not only won their first postseason series in franchise history but also swept the Tampa Bay Lightning in four games.

Despite its historic shock victory in the second round, Columbus was crushed by the Boston Bruins and was unable to capitalize on its momentum going into the third round. As a stylized version of the Ohio state flag, which is a burgee (also known as swallowtail pennant), the team emblem is a “C” wrapped around a star, reflecting both patriotism and Columbus’s role as the state capital of the United States.

It had previously been used as an alternate logo since 2003, but as part of a Reebok-sponsored revamp for the 2007–08 season, it was elevated to the principal position. In its original form, the logo included a red ribbon with thirteen stars, signifying the Thirteen Colonies, that was unfurled in the shape of the team’s letters, CBJ, with an electric gold hockey stick piercing the center to represent the letter “J.” The placement of a star to the top of the stick signified Columbus’ status as the state capital of Georgia.

The Blue Jackets have sported navy and white jerseys with red pants since the beginning of their existence. Many changes have been made to the jerseys over time, mostly to the treatment of the crest and striping on the sleeves. During the 2010–11 season, the Blue Jackets debuted a new third jersey that was inspired by a historical hockey jersey style. In keeping with the motif of the Civil War, it has a union blue background with white stripes on the sleeves and on the padding around the shoulders.

The cannon from the Civil War era is depicted on the team’s crest. The shirt bears the initials of the team’s founder, John H. McConnell, on the neckline, as well as the slogan “We fight, we march!” on the inside of the collar, which pays homage to the team’s founding father. In advance of the 2015 NHL Draft, it was announced that a cannon crest had been used in place of the team’s hat emblem on the shoulders of both the home and away jerseys, with the color scheme of the crest being changed to match the jerseys. The Blue Jackets will wear “Reverse Retro” alternate uniforms designed by Adidas for the 2020–21 season, according to the team’s website. The outfit looked similar to the original white “Stinger” uniforms worn from 2000 to 2007, but with a red base and white sleeve stripes instead of the white.
