The Cleveland Indians are a professional baseball team headquartered in Cleveland, Ohio, that participates in the American League (National League) and the American Association of Professional Baseball (AL). Two World Series championships have been won by the Indians, the first of which came in 1920 and the second of which came in 1948. The Cleveland Indians were created as a minor league baseball team in Grand Rapids, Michigan, in 1899, before transferring to its current home in Cleveland in 1900. The Cleveland Bluebirds, often known as the Blues, were a minor league baseball team that gained big-league status in 1901 after being promoted from the minors. When the team was renamed the Cleveland Bronchos in 1902, they earned the moniker “Naps” in honor of their new star player, Nap Lajoie, who had joined the team the previous season.
Local media were asked to propose a new name for the franchise in 1915, and the name “Indians” was chosen by Charles Somers, the franchise’s owner at the time.
