The Cavaliers are an American professional basketball team headquartered in Cleveland that competes in the NBA’s Eastern Conference (2016). The Cavaliers were an NBA expansion team in 1970, owned by tycoon Nick Mileti, who previously owned the Cleveland Indians and the city’s WHA team (the Cavaliers have since gone through several changes of ownership). They concluded their debut season with the league’s poorest record, thanks in part to John Warren accidentally shooting at and scoring in an opponent’s basket.
Despite their terrible season, the Cavaliers won the first overall pick in the 1971 NBA draught, guard Austin Carr. Basketball, the only major sport invented in America, has gone global.
In 1975–76, Fitch led a squad that included Carr, forward Bobby (“Bingo”) Smith, and center Nate Thurmond to a 49–33 record and the team’s first division title. The Cavs’ first playoff series (in Eastern Conference semifinal versus the Washington Bullets) was remembered as the “Miracle of Richfield” (for the suburban location of the Coliseum, the team’s home arena from 1974 to 1994).
The Cavaliers proceeded to the Eastern Conference finals, where they were defeated by the Boston Celtics in six games. Cleveland had two more winning seasons after its “Miracle” season but was eliminated in the first round both times. Between 1978–79 and 1986–87, the Cavs lost every season because of poor front-office decisions and high head-coach turnover. Wayne Embry took over as general manager in 1985 and appointed Lenny Wilkens as coach in 1986–87.
Wilkens made the Cavs a defensive-minded team that rapidly found success. The Cavs won 42 games in 1987–88 but were defeated in the first round of the playoffs by Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls. The following year’s playoff series versus Jordan’s Bulls was far more memorable. The Cavs finished the 1988–89 regular season 57–25, second only to the Detroit Pistons in the Eastern Conference.
Cleveland’s first-round series versus the Bulls went to a fifth game, which ended when Jordan made “The Shot,” a buzzer-beating basket while defender Craig Ehlo passed by. The Cavaliers had their best regular-season record ever in 1991–92, and they beat the New Jersey Nets and Boston Celtics in the playoffs to reach the Eastern Conference finals. They met the Bulls again, who beat the Cavs in six games. In 1994, the Cavs moved to a new downtown facility.
They made the playoffs five times between 1992–93 and 1997–98, but only once made it past the first round, a conference semifinal loss to the Bulls in 1993, and subsequently lost for six straight seasons, including a conference-worst 17–65 performance in 2002–03. With the first pick in the NBA draught, the Cavaliers selected LeBron James, a highly acclaimed high school star from nearby Akron. In 2005–06, James led the Cavaliers to their first NBA Finals appearance, when they were swept by the San Antonio Spurs.
The Cavaliers won 66 games in 2008–09, the greatest record in the NBA. It wasn’t enough, though. The Cavs were beaten in the Eastern Conference finals by the Orlando Magic. The Cavs had another NBA-best record in 2009–10, but were swept by the Celtics in the second round. James joined the Miami Heat in the off-season, and the Cavaliers fell to the NBA’s basement in 2010–11.
Between 2011 and 2014, the Cavaliers won the NBA draught lottery three times in a row, thanks to their mediocre play and exceptional luck. Cleveland’s youthful and potential core of players, led by All-Star point guard Kyrie Irving, enticed James back in July 2014. Following the trade for a power forward Kevin Love, the Cavaliers were the clear favorites in the Eastern Conference.
Cleveland struggled early in the season before putting together the conference’s second-best record. Despite losing Love for the season in Cleveland’s fourth playoff game and an injured Irving missing numerous playoff games, James’ excellent postseason play guided the franchise to its second NBA finals trip.
Despite Irving’s broken kneecap in the first game of the series, James led Cleveland to two wins before the Golden State Warriors won the NBA Cup in six games. In 2015–16, the Cavaliers won the Eastern Conference and dodged the injury bug in the conference playoffs, losing only two games en way to a rematch with the Warriors. The Cavaliers were down three games to one when James and Irving went on a tear. They guided Cleveland to three straight wins despite facing elimination, a first in the NBA finals, to win the franchise’s first title.
Cleveland won 51 games the next season to finish second in the Eastern Conference. The squad then cruised through the first three rounds of the playoffs, losing only once, to set up a rematch with the Warriors in the NBA finals, the first time two teams had met in three seasons. The Cavs couldn’t duplicate their spectacular upset of the Warriors last season and lost in five games.
The Cavaliers struggled to the fourth-best record in the Eastern Conference after trading Irving in the off-season. But James led Cleveland to its fourth consecutive conference victory and another finals battle against the Warriors. The tired and under-talented Cavaliers were swept by the Warriors in a four-game series. The Cavaliers deteriorated without James, completing 2018–19 with the same losing record (19–63) as the season before he left.
