Career

From the age of fourteen, Christian Berkel lived in Paris as an adolescent. The work of Marcel Marceau, whose pantomimes he reenacted at home, was his first crucial engagement with the theatre. He had acting classes from Pierre Bertin while still in school, which Jean-Louis Barrault arranged for him. He attended the German Film and Television Academy in Berlin after graduating from high school. Ingmar Bergman cast him as the student in The Snake Egg in 1977, when he was 19 years old. Berkel played the son of actuary Konrad Pfandler (Curd Jürgens) in the crime scene episode Rot – rot – tot, which has the highest number of viewers of all crime scenes.

[Until 1993, he worked in the Stadttheater Augsburg, Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus, Schauspielhaus Bochum, Residenztheater Munich, Burgtheater Vienna, and Schillertheater Berlin. Claus Peymann, Rudolf Noelte, and Alexander Lang were among his collaborators. In 1998, he was awarded the Golden Gong for his portrayal of a psychotic family father in Jobst Oetzmann’s crime drama series Black Advent. Berkel went on to play the role of banker Weich in Dieter Wedel’s multi-part series The King of St. Pauli and The Semmeling Affair, as well as in Dominik Graf’s Your best years and Helmut Dietl’s comedy Rossini – or the murderous question of who slept with whom.

Berkel played General Käutner alongside Sebastian Koch in the globally successful production Black Book in 2005, and the part of morgue director in the Hollywood production Flightplan – Without a Trace, directed by Paul Verhoeven, starring Jodie Foster in the titular role. Berkel played the character of then-Interior Senator Helmut Schmidt in the 2006 television film Die Sturmflut. In 2006, Berkel played as Eduard “Ted” Fröhlich in the two-part therapy comedy Helen, Fred, and Ted, directed by Sherry Hormann. He was nominated for the Golden Camera prize the following year with his partner and colleague Andrea Sawatzki.

In 2007, he appeared in Aleksandr Buravsky’s drama Leningrad in the character of Vinkelmeyer. In the same year, Christian Berkel received a second Hollywood offer: he played Albrecht in the film Operation Walküre – Das Stauffenberg-Attentat, a thriller about the failed Hitler attack on Mertz von Quirnheim in 1944 (with Tom Cruise as Count Stauffenberg). Berkel starred as Eric, the landlord, in Quentin Tarantino’s 2009 film Inglourious Basterds. In the same year, he appeared in the TV film Mogadishu as Helmut Schmidt, this time as Chancellor during the kidnapping of the airliner “Landshut.”

In 2016, he appeared in a Paul Verhoeven film for the second time, opposite Isabelle Huppert in the award-winning French thriller Elle. In 2018, he starred in the Amazon Prime series Beat (directed by Marco Kreuzpaintner), and in 2019, he shot the Netflix series Criminal (director: Oliver Hirschbiegel). Berkel appeared in numerous episodes of television crime dramas such as Derrick, Der Alte, SOKO 5113, and Polizeiruf 110. From 2006 to 2020, he played the silent LKA chief inspector Bruno Schumann in the ZDF series Der Kriminalist. Berkel announced his departure from the criminalist in 2019 to pursue new pursuits.
