Chris Whitty Biography and Wiki:

On April 21, 1966, Whitty became the first of four sons to be born to Kenneth and Susannah Whitty. He was born in Gloucester, which is located in Gloucestershire.  His father worked for the British Council and was stationed in a number of countries, including Nigeria and Malawi, where the family lived at the time. Kaduna was their home in Nigeria. At the age of 17, Kenneth Whitty was killed in 1984 by militants belonging to the Abu Nidal Organization, which is a Palestinian terrorist organisation. At the time of his death, Whitty was serving as the Deputy Director of the British Council in Athens.  His mother had a career in education.  His maternal uncle Sir Christopher MacRae was also a diplomat, and his grandmother Grace Summerhayes was a pioneering obstetrician in Africa, who built up the first maternity hospital in Ghana in 1928. Both of these individuals came from his mother’s side of the family.

Whitty was required to complete his education in the United Kingdom , where he attended Windlesham House School in the town of Pulborough, West Sussex, and Malvern College in the county of Worcestershire. After that, he pursued his education at Pembroke College in Oxford (BA in Physiology, DSc in medical science), Wolfson College in Oxford (BM BCh in Medicine, 1991; he was also the founding chair of the National Postgraduate Committee[9] at Wolfson College), the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (DTM&H in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, 1996; MSc in Epidemiology, 1996), Northumbria University (LLM in Medical (DipEcon in Economics).  Whitty is a Gresham Professor of Physic at Gresham College, a position that dates back to 1597. He also works as a consultant physician for the National Health Service (NHS) at University College London Hospitals (UCLH) and the Hospital for Tropical Diseases.  Before being promoted to the position of Chief Medical Officer, he held the position of Professor of Public and International Health at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), where he was also the Director of the Malaria Centre.

In the United Kingdom, Africa, and Asia, he conducted research on infectious diseases while still working as a physician. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation presented the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine with a grant of 31 million pounds in 2008 to support malaria research in Africa. When the study was being carried out, Whitty was serving as the primary investigator for the ACT Consortium, which was in charge of the project.  [Between the years 2009 and 2015, he worked for the Department for International Development as the Chief Scientific Adviser and as the director of research (DFID).He oversaw the Research and Evidence Division, which was responsible for conducting research in the areas of health, agriculture, climate change, energy, infrastructure, the economy, and governance. During this time, he collaborated with Neil Ferguson and Jeremy Farrar to write an article for Nature titled “Infectious disease: Tough choices to reduce Ebola transmission.” The article, which was published under the title “Infectious disease: Tough choices to reduce Ebola transmission, explained the response of the UK government to Ebola in support of the government of Sierra Leone. He played a leading role in the design of this response, which included the proposal to build and support centres.

Between the months of January 2016 and August 2021, he held the position of Chief Scientific Adviser for the Department of Health and Social Care. In this role, he was accountable for the research and development activities carried out by the department, including serving as the Head of the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR). Between the years 2017 and 2018, he served as the head of the scientific and engineering profession in the government as well as the role of interim Government Chief Scientific Adviser. When the COVID-19 epidemic broke out, Whitty and two of his subordinates, Jenny Harries and Jonathan Van-Tam, played prominent roles in the response. During this time period, the military nerve agent Novichok was found to be responsible for the poisonings that occurred in Salisbury in 2018, and Whitty chaired the government SAGE (Scientific Advisory Group in Emergencies) and advised COBR for the situation.

This included making appearances in televised press conferences, frequently alongside the Prime Minister Boris Johnson and the Chief Scientific Adviser Sir Patrick Vallance, and providing evidence before parliamentary bodies.   Beginning on March 19th, Whitty was featured in public service announcements that aired on national television to describe the government’s social-distance strategy that was used during the epidemic to help restrict the transmission of the virus. After Boris Johnson and Health Secretary Matt Hancock tested positive for the virus, it was announced on March 27 that he was self-isolating due to symptoms that were compatible with COVID-19. This came after it was reported that Matt Hancock and Boris Johnson had tested positive for the virus. It was stated that he had made his way back to work on April 6 after having recovered from the symptoms of the illness.  This position, which was opposed by other scientists including members of the Independent SAGE group, was expressed by him in July when he spoke before the Lords Science and Technology Committee.

He stated that the elimination of the disease in the UK would be exceedingly difficult. During a televised conference held on the 12th of October, during which the Prime Minister revealed three layers of locally enacted restrictions, Whitty stated that he did not feel convinced that the measures included in the highest tier would be “sufficient to get on top of it. At a televised briefing held on the 31st of October, Whitty and Vallance presented the most recent data and forecasts. The Prime Minister also promised stronger restrictions to be implemented over the all of England. During the epidemic, Hugh Pym, the editor in charge of health coverage for the BBC, referred to him as “the official who will possibly have the largest impact on our ordinary lives of any individual policymaker in contemporary times.” John Crace, who is a sketch writer for The Guardian, referred to him as “the Geek-in-Chief,” and said that everyone now considers him as the de facto prime minister of the country. During this time, he was likened to James Niven, a Scottish physician who is famous for lowering the mortality rate of influenza patients in Manchester during the influenza pandemic that occurred in 1918.
