The Carolina Hurricanes are a professional ice hockey team headquartered in Raleigh, North Carolina, that competes in the NHL. The Carolina Hurricanes are a member of the National Hockey League (NHLEastern )’s Conference and were champions of the Stanley Cup in 2006.
The New England Whalers were a professional ice hockey team headquartered in Hartford, Connecticut, that was founded in 1972 as a member of the newly formed World Hockey Association (WHA). The signing of 49-year-old hockey veteran Gordie Howe in 1977, who would go on to play with his two sons for three seasons until his retirement in 1980, was the Whalers’ most memorable moment during those formative years of the franchise.
When the World Hockey Association (WHA) was forced to merge with the NHL in 1979 due to financial difficulties, the Whalers were one of four clubs that were incorporated into the elder league. In its inaugural season in the National Hockey League, the Hartford Whalers qualified for the postseason despite posting a losing record throughout the regular season. While they did not qualify for the playoffs for a second time until the 1985–86 season, the Whalers finished last in their division during four of the five seasons in which they did not qualify for the postseason during that interval of time.
There was one ray of hope during this period of adversity, however, when the team selected Ron Francis with the fourth overall pick in the 1981 NHL draught, signaling the beginning of a new chapter for the organization. Following his induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame, Francis would go on to spend nearly 16 seasons with the franchise, spending time in both Hartford and Carolina. Francis finished his career with the franchise with the second-most assists in NHL history.
Between 1985–86 and 1991–92, Francis guided the Whalers to seven consecutive berths in the NHL Playoffs, however, the team fell in the first round in all but one of those years save one. This was followed by another extended sequence of bad play, during which the team fell farther and further down the standings in their division. Additional issues associated with playing in a relatively small market continued to weigh on the Whalers’ financial situation, and after an unsuccessful attempt to build a new arena in Hartford, the team was transferred to Raleigh and renamed the Carolina Hurricanes in 1997.
While the Hurricanes were awaiting the completion of a permanent stadium in Raleigh, they played their home games in Greensboro, which is 75 miles (120 kilometers) west of the capital. Despite continuing the franchise’s dismal record in their first season in North Carolina, the team returned the following season to capture its first division title in 12 years, a feat that was accomplished the following year.
With winning records in each of the following three seasons, the Hurricanes earned their first appearance in the Stanley Cup finals in 2001–02, where they were defeated by the Detroit Red Wings in five games. The Carolina Hurricanes posted the best record in franchise history during the 2005–06 season, led by the outstanding play of rookie star Eric Staal and team captain Rod Brind’Amour, and finished the season with a dramatic seven-game triumph over the Edmonton Oilers in the Stanley Cup playoffs. For nine seasons following 2008–09, the University of Miami Hurricanes were unable to move further than the conference finals.
Brind’Amour, who had retired as a player in 2010, was hired head coach of the Hurricanes following the conclusion of the 2017–18 season. Under his leadership, the team returned to the postseason in 2018–19, however, they were eliminated in the conference finals for the second time. During the following two seasons, both of which were cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Hurricanes advanced to the postseason, where they were eliminated in the first round in 2019–20 and the second round in 2020–21, respectively.
