Buffalo Sabres Bio Data :

A professional ice hockey team based in Buffalo, New York, competes in the Eastern Conference of the National Hockey League. The Buffalo Sabres are a member of the National Hockey League (NHL). The Buffalo Sabres have won two conference titles in their history (1975, 1999). The Buffalo Sabres first appeared on the ice in 1970 as an expansion franchise.

As a result of the play of “the French Connection,” a line that had three Quebec-born stars: centre Gilbert Perreault, left-wing Rick Martin, and right-wing René Robert, the team advanced to the postseason for the first time in 1972–73. Despite only being in its fifth season of existence, the Buffalo Sabres won a division championship in 1974–75, and the team progressed to the Stanley Cup playoffs, where it was defeated by the defending champion Philadelphia Flyers.

The French Connection, which included left-wing Craig Ramsay, helped the Sabres to four consecutive second-place division finishes between 1975–76 and 1978–79, although the team failed to move any further than the NHL quarterfinals during that era. Buffalo fared slightly better in the early 1980s, winning consecutive division crowns in 1979–80 and 1980–81, as well as making it to the NHL semifinals in the following season (1980).

The Sabres qualified for the postseason nine times in the eleven seasons from 1981–82 to 1991–92, led by the play of all-star defenseman Mike Ramsey, but were only able to win one series in those nine postseason trips. When the Buffalo Sabres acquired goaltender Dominik Hasek in 1992, he quickly established himself as one of the finest goaltenders in hockey history during his stint with the team.

Lindy Ruff, a former Buffalo Sabres player, was hired as the team’s head coach in 1997, and he guided the team to a spot in the conference finals in his first season in the position. The Buffalo Sabres advanced to their second Stanley Cup finals in franchise history in 1998–99, after being seeded seventh (out of eight Eastern Conference teams). They met the Dallas Stars, who had the best record in the NHL that season, in the playoffs.

After a highly contested series that featured four one-goal decisions, including the Cup-clinching game six, which was won when Dallas’ Brett Hull scored a controversial goal in triple overtime, Buffalo was eliminated. Despite the fact that the vast majority of Buffalo players, coaches, and spectators believed Hull’s skate was illegally in the crease when he scored, game officials found differently. After making the playoffs in each of the next two seasons, the Sabres went on a three-year postseason hiatus until returning in the following season.

Buffalo was able to return to the playoffs in 2005–06 thanks to the efforts of outstanding goaltender Ryan Miller, who helped the Sabres reach the Eastern Conference finals. The Sabres earned the Presidents’ Trophy as the team with the best regular-season record in the NHL in 2006–07, and they advanced to the conference finals for the second consecutive season.

The team maintained a winning record through the conclusion of the first decade of the twenty-first century and into the next. A lacklustre season in 2012–13 brought the squad’s modest success to a grinding halt when Ruff was fired by the management team.

After the 2013–14 season, which saw the Sabres post the poorest record in the NHL, the team traded Miller in an effort to jumpstart the rebuilding process. Miller was a free agent after the season. It was the continuation of the team’s troubles that resulted in an extended stretch of seasons in which Buffalo failed to qualify for the postseason.
