The Brooklyn Nets are an American professional basketball team based in Brooklyn, New York, that participates in the National Basketball Association’s Eastern Conference. They are a member of the National Basketball Association (NBA). The Nets won two titles during their tenure in the American Basketball Association (ABA) (1974, 1976). The team was created in 1967 and was first known as the New Jersey Americans.
In 1968–69, the club relocated to Long Island, which resulted in the team changing its name to the New York Nets. While the Nets reached the ABA finals in 1971–72, they finished no higher than third in any of their first six seasons. In 1973, the team acquired great player Julius Erving, who immediately revitalized the franchise, leading it to a 25-win improvement over the previous season in his first season in New York. That season, the Nets won the ABA championship, and Erving guided the team to a second victory in 1975–76. When the ABA and the NBA combined in 1976, the Nets were obliged to fund $8 million to join the established league.
In 1977, the franchise relocated to New Jersey. In 1981, the Nets relocated to the Meadowlands (after four seasons on the home court of the Rutgers University basketball team), hired Larry Brown as head coach (he was fired after two seasons), and drafted power player Buck Williams. Williams, a tenacious rebounder, was voted Rookie of the Year and guided the Nets to their first winning season in the NBA in 1981–82.
The Nets qualified for the playoffs that year and the following four, although they won only one postseason series during that era, defeating the defending NBA champion Philadelphia 76ers in 1984. The Nets returned to the playoffs in 1991–92, led by a promising young team that included guards Kenny Anderson and Drain Petrovi, as well as forward Derrick Coleman.
However, this Nets team was undone by Petrovi’s sudden death in a car accident in 1993 and a spate of misbehavior and inconsistent play by Anderson and Coleman, which resulted in a near-complete roster turnover by the end of the 1995–96 season, following three first-round playoff eliminations in the early 1990s.
New Jersey won just one more game over the remainder of the decade and began the new millennium as the division’s second-to-last finisher. The Nets acquired point guard Jason Kidd in 2001, and he immediately rejuvenated the team, leading it to a 26-win improvement over its 2000–01 record in his first season in New Jersey. In 2012, the team — which was then owned by a consortium of investors that included prominent people such as Mikhail Prokhorov and Jay-Z — relocated to Brooklyn in order to take advantage of the greater media market and cultural cachet in New York. In 2012–13, a rebuilt and revived Nets squad finished 49–33 but were eliminated in the first round of the NBA playoffs.
The next offseason, the Nets acquired All-Star players Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce and hired Kidd as head coach, but the club struggled early in the 2013–14 season to live up to its lofty expectations. However, one notable occurrence occurred during that season on February 23, 2014, when the team signed free agent Jason Collins, who became the first openly gay player to play in any of the four major North American team sports that night by playing in Brooklyn’s game. Collins was a key member of a resurgent Nets team that was among the league’s best in the second half of the season and finished with a postseason berth despite a turbulent regular season.
Kidd compelled a rare coach trade to the Milwaukee Bucks the next off-season, and the weakened Nets quickly became one of the NBA’s worst teams with the departures of Pierce and Garnett in 2014 and 2015, respectively. Despite trading away a large portion of their 2010s first-round draught picks in the 2013 Garnett and Pierce trade (which many sportswriters dubbed the worst in NBA history), the Nets assembled a competitive young group that unexpectedly returned to the playoffs in 2018–19.
