Brian Culbertson was born in 1973 and grew up in Decatur, Illinois. His father, a respected band leader and trumpeter in high school jazz, developed his music interest.Culbertson also listened to Blood, Sweat & Tears, Tower of Power, and Earth, Wind & Fire in the 70s, when they were growing up. At the age of eight he began his music instruction with piano lessons; at nine he progressed to drums, at 10, and at 12.
He started composing at junior level, creatively ambitious. In his early high school year, he experimented with the new Yamaha DX-7 synthesizer and an ancient four-piece recording machine in his basement. His effort won him six Down Beat Student Awards, both individually and in five groups.
He also began entering MIDI sequencing and synths during his high school years. He couldn’t find musicians that could perform his songs on the level he wanted, because most of his contemporaries were made into heavy metal, so Culbertson, one of his major influences to Pop Producer/Songwriter David Foster, learned to play all the parts himself.
After graduation, he went to Chicago to study music at the University of Paul. On campus, he began to meet high-level musicians and played in a band. Culbertson entered the Mesa/Blue Moon label in 1994. In the bedroom he shared his debut album, Long Night Out, with three college mates, he played most of the instruments himself but also with a small supporting ensemble. The LP has been in the top five of adult contemporary charts for ten straight weeks. On his follow-up album, Modern Life, Culbertson avoided the one-man band in favour of a live ensemble consisting of some of Chicago’s top musicians, plus renowned saxophonist Gerald Albright.
Career
In the 1990s, he released numerous further albums, including After Hours (1995), Secrets (1997), and Somethin’ Bout Love (1999). The productions of Culbertson include Bob Mamet and Steve Cole’s albums. After he had composed advertising jingles, Culbertson turned his attention to soundtracks. In 2001, Nice & Slow was released by the pianist (who could also play the trombone, the trumpet and the drums), followed by Come Up in 2003.
He published It’s on Tonight two years later, then in 2006 Soulful Christmas, a holiday favourite collection and an original. In 2008, Culbertson published Bringing Back the Funk, a well-known album that gives the genre of urban jazz a new life.
A large list of employees included Bootsy Collins, Larry Graham, Ray Parker, Jr. and David T. Walker. In 2009, he followed it with a live album and in 2010, XII returned to the studio. In June 2012, Culbertson published its 13th album, Dreams, which features a plethora of modern all-star jazz, R&B performers and vocalists. He started a dream project later that year.
Culbertson, now an independent artist, wanted to review Long Night Out music for a long time since its debut in 1994. In 2013, Nathan East, Russ Freeman, Steve Lukather and Candy Dulfer recorded the same tracks as a few, plus a 33-piece band. It was published on his own BCM label Another Long Night Out in February 2014.
Two years ago, he released a concert album, Live, which was shown at the Yoshi San Francisco concert for his band on the 20th anniversary of the Tour. Colors of Love reached its highest level in the Billboard Jazz Album List in 2018. A trio album Winter Stories appeared the next year. 2020 saw his twentyth studio album, the XX, released in the studio with the guest singers Bootsy Collins, Avery Sunshine and Noel Gourdin. The first EP of its thematic albums, including Blue= Melancholy and White = Hope, was launched by Soundcapes in 2021 like Red Passion.
