Berry Gordy Biography and Wiki:

Berry Gordy was the seventh child in a family that belonged to the middle class and was born on November 28th, 1929 in the city of Detroit, Michigan. His father, Berry Gordy Sr. Berry’s parents placed a high priority on education for their children, therefore he was the only one of his siblings who did not complete their formal education. Instead of going to college, Berry decided to pursue a career in boxing instead. He continued in this line of work until the year 1950, when he received a call from the United States Army to report for duty in the Korean War. Soon after he got back to the United States in 1953, he wed Thelma Coleman. After beginning to write songs, he quickly became interested in music and shortly after launched the 3D Record Mart, which was a store that specialized in jazz music. Despite our best efforts, we were not successful in this endeavour. After that, Berry found work at the Lincoln-Mercury plant.

His love and passion for music had not yet died, and someway, probably through links with his family, he became acquainted with Al Green, who was the owner of the talent club at the Flame Show Bar. There, he became acquainted with the vocalist Jackie Wilson, who, in 1957, made a recording of Berry’s song “Reet Petite.” It was just a moderate success in the United States, but it dominated the music charts in the United Kingdom. After that, further songs were released, some of which were quite successful, such as “Lonely Teardrops,” which also topped the charts, and “All I Could Do Was Cry.” Berry made the decision to invest all of the money he had made from the popularity of his songs into production. In 1957, he became aware of the band known as “The Miracles,” and soon after that, he began compiling a list of well-known musicians.

Tamla Records was an R&B record label that he established by taking a loan from his family. Soon after, Motown became a thriving independent corporation that recorded some of the most successful groups and songs, including “The Supremes,” “Stevie Wonder,” “Four Tops,” “Martha and Vandellas,” “Marvin Gaye,” “Jr. Walker & the All-Stars,” “Michael Jackson,” and “Smokey Robinson.” Smokey Robinson’s “Way Over There,” which was released in 1960, was Motown’s first commercially successful recording as a producer of hit songs. Berry was a co-writer of 240 songs that were included in the Jobete music repertoire, which was eventually sold for a total of $330 million. In 1988, Berry was honoured by being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. His induction into the Junior Achievement U.S. Business Hall of Fame took place in the year 1998. Additionally, he will be honoured with the prestigious Songwriters Hall of Fame Pioneer Award, making him the first living person to do so (In June 2013). In 1994, his autobiography titled “To Be Loved” was made available to the public.

Motown evolved into a paragon of black capitalism, artistic expression, and cultural pride because to Berry’s leadership. Even during those unwelcoming times for black people, Berry tried to spread beyond the radical boundaries with music that everyone liked regardless of colour or race. This was despite the fact that he was black. Berry used the slogan “The Sound of Young America” in his advertising for his business. Motown was responsible for a string of songs throughout the 1960s that helped transform the sound of popular music in the United States. Berry and his Motown successes continue to this day to be unrivalled and unparalleled in their field. After moving back to Detroit, Gordy pursued his passion for music by opening the 3-D Record Mart-House of Jazz with the assistance of his father and brother George. Gordy had always been an avid music fan. As a result of the store going out of business in 1955, Gordy was compelled to look for reliable employment in order to provide for his family.

After working in the foundry for a while, he moved on to working on the assembly line at the Lincoln-Mercury plant. He was employed by Ford Motor Company. Gordy, who did not enjoy his employment in the factory, left in 1957 to pursue a career as a professional songwriter. In 1959, with additional financial assistance from his father, he established a song publishing company called Jobete. Later that same year, he also established two record labels: Tamla Record Company and Motown. In the same year, 1959, Gordy bought the house on Grand Boulevard in Detroit that would later be known as Hartsville USA. He turned a photographic studio that was near the property’s back into a recording studio, set up administrative offices on the first level, and moved his family into the apartment that was on the second floor of the two-family building.

In 1960, Berry Gordy formally incorporated his business, Motown Records, which at the time included Tamla Records. He gave the new firm the name Motown Record Corporation. The company’s first release, “Money (That’s What I Want),” which was performed by Barrett Strong in 1960, was met with instant and overwhelming success. Motown’s first record to sell more than one million copies was “Shop Around” by The Miracles, which achieved this feat in the same year. Motown Record Corporation experienced more than one hundred Top Ten songs between the years 1961 and 1971, with performers such as Stevie Wonder, The Supremes, The Marvelettes, Marvin Gaye, and The Four Tops contributing to the success of the label. By 1966, the company had reached a revenue of $20 million and had expanded its headquarters on Grand Boulevard to include four additional properties. By 1967, Motown had expanded to encompass a total of five record labels. Gordy relocated Motown Records to the city of Los Angeles in 1972.

Although Gordy continued to write songs, he is credited with co-authoring a number of hits, including “Lonely Teardrops,” “I’ll be There,” and “Reet Petite,” among others. However, his true talent lay in bringing black popular music into the mainstream by spotting undiscovered talent and pairing them with the appropriate musical vehicle. He established an empire that fostered originality and fostered the development of its performers. After creating his record company, which produced hit after hit in a production line-style manner, he turned his attention to the film industry and had success with movies such as Lady Sings the Blues, Mahogany, and The Wiz. Gordy moved quickly to involve his family in the company. He appointed his father, whom he refers to as his “greatest hero,” and his mother to the position of president of the company. His sister Esther played a significant part in the firm at many different points, including the establishment of the Motown Museum.

In the late 1960s, Berry Gordy resided in a 1917 Italianate mansion in the Boston-Edison neighborhood of Detroit. The home featured a pool house and a five-car garage. Gordy sold the home in 2002. He had three marriages that ended in divorce, and he was the father of eight children from a variety of different partnerships, including one with Diana Ross, who was the most successful female musician on Motown Records. In 1988, the same year that Gordy sold his company to MCA for $61 million, he was also elected into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Gordy was a pioneer in the music industry. His autobiography, titled To Be Loved, was published that same year, in 1994. Berry Gordy was honourably discharged from the Army in 1953, and upon his return to Detroit he opened the Three-D Record Mart using the money he had received as a result of his military service. His devotion to the jazz of Stan Kenton, Charlie Parker, and Thelonius Monk had a greater impact on his selection of records than the demands of his consumers for “things like Fats Domino,” and as a result, his enterprise was doomed to fail.

After spending some time working for his father, Gordy went on to find work at Ford Motor Company, first as a chrome trimmer on an assembly line and later as a painter. Gordy’s technique of overcoming the tremendous boredom was to write songs in his head, some of which were recorded by local singers. Some of these songs were sung by local singers. Decca Records purchased several of his compositions, including “Reet Petite” and “Lonely Teardrops” (both of which were recorded by Jackie Wilson). When Berry Gordy compared the amount of money he made from his royalties to the amount of money Decca made from the modest hits, he realized that writing the hits wasn’t enough. He needed to get ownership of them. Gordy started his own record company after borrowing $700 from his father and forming it at the recommendation of a buddy, a teenager vocalist named William “Smokey” Robinson. Gordy’s company manufactured and marketed albums.

Berry Gordy Phone Number, Email, Contact Information, House Address, and Social Profiles:

The headquarters of Motown Records were located in a row house on West Grand Boulevard in Detroit. Berry Gordy slept on the second floor of the house while working on records on the first level. Over time, the business grew to the point where it required nine separate buildings to house its various divisions, all of which were located on the same street: Jobete, which was a music publishing company; Hartsville USA, which was a recording studio; musical accompanists; International Talent Management Inc.; the Motown Artist’s Development Department, which was the embodiment of Berry Gordy’s personal interest in his performers and was the place where they were taught to eat, dress, and act like (the last being reserved for the hit song-writing machine of Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier, and Eddie Holland).

The song “Shop Around,” which Smokey Robinson had written and which he and the Miracles had performed, was released by Motown in the year 1960. Since more than a million copies of the song were sold, Berry Gordy’s firm was able to usher in the most prosperous and influential era in the annals of popular music with the awarding of a gold record for the song. Motown Sound was a kind of music that was created by fusing traditional African American gospel singing with the emerging rock-and-roll sound that was being influenced by artists like Elvis Presley and the Beatles at the time. This resembled the traditional “R&B” (which stands for rhythm and blues), but at the same time it exemplified a new generation. Motown was responsible for more than 110 number one hit songs and countless records that landed in the top ten, such as “Please Mr. Postman,” “Reach Out, I’ll Be There,” “My Girl,” “Stop.

In the Name of Love,” “For Once in My Life,” “How Sweet It Is to Be Loved by You,” “Heard It Through the Grapevine,” “My Guy,” “Dancing in the Streets,” “Your Precious Love,” “Where Did Our Love Equally impressive is the list of artists that Berry Gordy is credited with bringing to the forefront of the music industry, including Diana Ross and the Supremes, the Jackson Five, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, the Four Tops, the Temptations, Gladys Knight and the Pips, Tammi Terrell and Marvin Gaye, the Marvelettes, Mary Wells, and Martha Reeves and the Vandellas. By the middle of the 1970s, a few of Motown’s musicians had begun to push back against Gordy’s authoritarian management style. Gordy’s “family” of stars started to fall apart as a result of defectors. Gladys Knight and the Pips were the first artists to depart Motown, and in 1975 the Jackson Five made the announcement that they would be heading to Epic Records after their contract with Motown concluded.
