We are faced with the additional labour that is required to ensure that all persons in our nation, regardless of the colour of their skin, have access to the fundamental rights. In most years, we observe Public Health Week by holding a number of events open to the general public at various times throughout the week.
As a result of the epidemic, we will be unable to take advantage of another opportunity to gather together in recognition of our work. The following are some highlighted examples of tremendous efforts being made across the department to improve the health and wellbeing of county residents, and centres our efforts on collaboration, equity, and justice. Taking a moment to reflect on the themes for this year’s Public Health Week, below are some highlighted examples of these efforts. Through the Alternatives to Incarceration initiative, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health has collaborated with other County departments, community representatives, and advocates to reimagine our justice system as one in which social service and public health resources are given priority over arrest and jailing. This collaboration has been going on for almost two years. Voters in Los Angeles County approved Measure J in November. This measure directs at least 10 percent of the county’s unrestricted funding toward community investments to combat racial injustice.
