Bai is a Chengdu native. When she was in the People’s Liberation Army, Bai Yuxiang () was a musician who later became a music teacher. As a result of her paternal grandfather being a military officer in the Kuomintang army, Bai’s family suffered during the Cultural Revolution. Chen Binbin, her mother, was persecuted during the Cultural Revolution.

Bai Ling’s parents divorced in the early 1980s, and her mother then married the renowned writer Xu Chi, who became Bai Ling’s stepfather. She has a sister who works for the Chinese tax bureau and a younger brother who has emigrated to Japan and now works for an American company. Bai Ling is the youngest of three siblings. Bai has described herself as a shy child who discovered that acting and performing were the best ways for her to express herself.

She learned how to perform by taking part in eight model plays at her elementary school shows during the Cultural Revolution (1966–1976). Bai was sent to Shuangliu, a labor camp on the outskirts of Chengdu, after she finished middle school. She joined the People’s Liberation Army in 1978 as an artist soldier after completing high school in Nyingchi Prefecture, Tibet.

Musical theatre was her primary form of entertainment while she was there. She was also a short-term Army nurse. A few years later, Ling revealed that she and other female performers in Tibet had been sexually assaulted and plied with alcohol by older male officers, leading to abortion due to the abuse. She attributes her subsequent alcoholism to her experience with sexual abuse. In the following years, Bai spent time in a psychiatric ward.

Bai joined Chengdu’s People’s Art Theater soon after she was discharged from the hospital in 1981, and she went on to become a professional actress. A year later, in 2004, Bai made a comeback in Chinese cinema by co-starring in Fruit Chan’s horror thriller Dumplings with Hong Kong actress Miriam Yeung. She won the Best Supporting Actress Hong Kong Film Award for her portrayal of the evil Aunt Mei in the film, which re-established her popularity among Chinese filmgoers.

In the same year, she won praise for her role in Hans Petter Moland’s independent film The Beautiful Country, in which she starred alongside Nick Nolte. Later that year, Bai served on the jury for the 55th Berlin International Film Festival. She appeared on the VH1 show But Can They Sing? as a cast member. With the release of The Gauntlet (a.k.a. Game of Assassins) in 2013, Bai saw a resurgence in her acting career, winning Best Actress awards at the Los Angeles Film Festival of Hollywood and the Asians on Film Festival the following year.

She also won the New York International Independent Film and Video Festival’s Best Feature Film Award for Speed Dragon. Bai and David Arquette starred in Jefery Levy’s adaptation of Nobel Prize laureate Jun’ichiro Tanizaki’s novel The Key in late 2014.
