Atlanta Hawks Bio Data :

The Atlanta Hawks are a professional basketball team headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia, that plays in the National Basketball Association. When the National Basketball Association (NBA) was founded in 1949, the Atlanta Hawks were one of the initial franchises to join the league. The team’s sole championship came in 1958 when they defeated the New York Giants.

The Tri-Cities Blackhawks were originally created in 1946 in Moline and Rock Island, Illinois, as well as Davenport, Iowa, and competed in the National Basketball League for three seasons prior to the formation of the National Basketball Association. Before the 1951–52 season, the Hawks relocated to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and adopted the nickname “Hawks” to reflect their new location.

With the second overall pick in the 1954 NBA draught, the Hawks were able to turn around their fortunes after years of mediocre play. Pettit would go on to become a future Hall of Famer, and the team’s record improved dramatically. It was 1955 when the Hawks relocated to St. Louis, Missouri, and it was 1956–57 when they reached the NBA Finals, where they were defeated by the Boston Celtics in seven games. The Hawks defeated the Celtics in a repeat of the finals the following season, claiming the franchise’s first championship in franchise history in the process.

Despite the fact that the Hawks returned to the postseason in all but one of the following 15 seasons, they only advanced to the finals twice, both times falling to the Celtics. In 1968, the Hawks were sold to a corporation based in Georgia, and they were forced to relocate to Atlanta. Pete Maravich, Walt Bellamy, and Lou Hudson were among the stars of the first generation of Atlanta teams.

As part of a post-draft deal that brought youngster Dominique Wilkins into the fold, the Hawks acquired the most recognizable superstar of the team’s Atlanta years: Michael Jordan. After leading the Hawks to four consecutive 50-win seasons in the 1980s, Wilkins established himself as one of the most prolific scorers in NBA history. Wilkins was nicknamed “the Human Highlight Film” for his extremely acrobatic slam dunks. In spite of his individual exploits, his team’s postseason success did not translate into postseason success for him, as Atlanta failed to move past the second round of the NBA Playoffs in any of his 12 seasons with them.

Although the 1999–2000 season marked the beginning of the Hawks’ most prolonged postseason drought in franchise history, the Hawks returned to postseason action during the 2007–08 season with a young team that forced the eventual champion Celtics to play seven games in their first-round series. Even though the Hawks were a consistent postseason force for the remainder of the first decade of the twenty-first century, they were unable to go past the second round of the playoffs during that time period.

For the first time since relocating to Atlanta, the Hawks had a breakthrough season in 2014–15, winning a franchise-record 60 games and reaching the Eastern Conference finals (where they were defeated by the Cleveland Cavaliers). As a result, the Hawks were unable to maintain their second-round status in 2015–16, and were relegated to the second round the following year as a result. In the ensuing off-season, the squad lost several of its important players, and the team struggled to a 24-win season and a last-place divisional finish in 2017–18.
