Anita Baker Bio Data :
Anita Baker is a songwriter and American vocalist who has a long, sparkling career and has received eight Grammy Awards to date. Anita Baker was born on January 26, 1958, in Toledo, Ohio. At the age of two, she was abandoned by her parents and raised in Detroit, Michigan, by a foster family.
Her foster parents died just at the age of 12. After the death of her foster parents, her foster sister looked after her upbringing. Baker had an interest in early music and at the age of 16 began to perform R&B in nightclubs in Detroit. It was after one such performance that Chapter 8’s funk bandleader David Washington noticed her and urged her to attend an audition to join the band.
Baker married Walter Bridgeforth Jr. on 24 December 1988. The marriage terminated in 2007, however. The couple had two sons, Walter Baker Bridgeforth and Edward Carlton Bridgeforth. The couple has two children. The net value of Anita Baker is estimated at $80 million.
Baker became a member of ‘Chapter 8’ in 1975 and after a series of concerts, Ariola Records handed over the band in 1979. Baker returned to Detroit and worked as a waiter and a law company receptionist. Her debut solo album, ‘The Songstress,’ was released in 1983 under the Beverly Glen label. The CD was very popular and many of the songs were on the charts.
Following the release of the album, she had a lengthy legal struggle about royalty and contract breaches with the Beverly Glen label. In 1985, she won the case against the label. In 1985 she got a contract with the company Elektra Records and in 1986 she released her second album ‘Rapture.’ The album was a tremendous hit, sold internationally to more than 8 million copies and also to ‘The Rapture Tour.’
In 1988, Baker published her third album, “Give you the best I get,” which became a great smash immediately. The single ‘Just Because’ and the title song were chart tops. In 1990, she launched the ‘Compositions’ album, and tracks such as ‘Talk to Me’ and ‘Fairy Tales’ catapulted the album above the threshold for sales by a million copies. Jazz music inspired the tunes and Baker also took part in the songwriting process.
After a brief musical overview, Baker released her 5th album ‘Rhythm of Love’ in 1994, and her single ‘Body and Soul’ became a conversation topping. The album was an instant success and sold over two million copies, making it one of the few acts with four straight platinum-selling albums. Towards the conclusion of the year, she also participated in a ‘Love World Tour Rhythm’ which lasted 11 months.
In 2000 Baker took a vacation from his music to care after her family, but all of her recordings were destroyed by strange popping sounds on the leased tapestry. In 2004 she launched her album ‘My All’ and despite being back to music after a long hiatus, she was appreciated by music enthusiasts and gold-certified. A year later, the album ‘Christmas Fantasy’ was released.
She began a two-year concert tour in 2007 called Anita Baker’s ‘An Evening’ and performed at various occasions. In 2012, Baker published her own rendition of the song “Lately,” which became famous. Since 2010 she worked on the single, “Only Forever,” but the release date of the album was not yet finalized.
At the age of two, Baker’s parents abandoned her and a foster family reared her in Detroit. Her childhood was naturally rough but from a very early age, she began to play music in the city’s nightclubs. Her expertise was Rhythm and Blues(R&B), and she was offered the opportunity to join a band called “Chapter 8,” following a performance in one of the nightclubs.
But she really came to the spotlight as a solo singer and her very first record, ‘Rapture,’ made her a household name throughout America. Baker is one of the few performers whose first four albums have sold more than a million copies and remain one of the R&B icons. Baker opted to break up to raise her kid and returned to work after a long layoff, but her stature as an icon was solidified when her return record became a great hit.
In 1987, Baker received the ‘Grammy Awards’ for best R&B vocal performance, ‘Rapture’ female, and ‘Sweet Love’ song for best rhythm & blues. In 1988, for her song ‘Ain’t No Need to Worry,’ she won the Grammy award for best soul gospel performances by a duo, group, chorus, or chorus.
In 1989, Baker received the ‘Grammy Awards for Best R&B Vocal Performance’ for the song ‘Giving You The Best That I Good’ for the best rhythm and blues tune. She has been awarded the Grammy Award for Best R&B Vocal Performance for ‘Compositions’ in 1991. In 1996, for the song ‘I Apologize,’ she won the Grammy award for the best female R&B vocal performance.
