Anita Baker is a songwriter and American vocalist who has a long, sparkling career and has received eight Grammy Awards to date. Anita Baker was born on January 26, 1958, in Toledo, Ohio. At the age of two, she was abandoned by her parents and raised in Detroit, Michigan, by a foster family.
Her foster parents died just at the age of 12. After the death of her foster parents, her foster sister looked after her upbringing. Baker had an interest in early music and at the age of 16 began to perform R&B in nightclubs in Detroit. It was after one such performance that Chapter 8’s funk bandleader David Washington noticed her and urged her to attend an audition to join the band.

Career
Baker became a member of ‘Chapter 8’ in 1975 and after a series of concerts, Ariola Records handed over the band in 1979. Baker returned to Detroit and worked as a waiter and a law company receptionist. Her debut solo album, ‘The Songstress,’ was released in 1983 under the Beverly Glen label. The CD was very popular and many of the songs were on the charts.
Following the release of the album, she had a lengthy legal struggle about royalty and contract breaches with the Beverly Glen label. In 1985, she won the case against the label. In 1985 she got a contract with the company Elektra Records and in 1986 she released her second album ‘Rapture.’ The album was a tremendous hit, sold internationally to more than 8 million copies and also to ‘The Rapture Tour.’
