Alejandro González Iárritu was born on August 15, 1963, in Mexico City, Mexico. He is an American filmmaker. Mr. Rodriguez is a Mexican filmmaker and producer whose films, which frequently contained interconnected stories and a nonlinear narrative helped establish him as one of the pioneers of the Mexican film renaissance in the early twenty-first century.
González Iárritu was expelled from school when he was sixteen years old. A commercial sailor’s first employment convinced him to continue his education at the Ibero-American University in Mexico City, where he graduated with honors.
During his time as a disc jockey at Mexico’s top-rated radio station, González Iárritu crafted playlists into an informal narrative arc; he credits this experience with fostering his interest in narrative. Later, he rose through the ranks to become the youngest producer for Televisa, Mexico’s main television corporation. After leaving Televisa, he created the production company Zeta Film in 1991 and went on to work in advertising as a writer and director of commercials for television.
Career
González Iárritu spent the years 1988 to 1990 focusing on his first love: music, for which he composed the scores for six Mexican films. During this period, he became acquainted with Mexican novelist and screenwriter Guillermo Arriaga, and the two embarked on a long and fruitful collaboration that would last until his death in 2011.
When González Iárritu traveled to the United States to study filmmaking, the pair continued to correspond and develop ideas, and they transformed one of their early ideas—about three interconnected stories set in a grim but realistic Mexico City—into the screenplay for González Iárritu’s feature directorial debut, Amores Perros (Lovers of Dogs) (2000).
González Iárritu took use of his newfound fame to land high-profile positions directing two unorthodox short films, one of which was released in theatres.
