The American singer and pianist is Roberta Cleopatra Flack. She was a very popular singer in the 1970′ and 1980’s with the number 1 singles “The first time I ever saw Your face,” “Killing Me softly with her song,” “Feel Like Makin’ Love,” and ‘Where is the love.’ Roberta Flack was born to Laron LeRoy and Irene Council Flack in Black Mountain, North Carolina on 10 February 1937. At the age of nine, she began playing the piano. She was a young teenager in classical piano and a music scholarship from Howard University.

At the age of 15, she joined the university with one of the youngest students. Later, she transformed her major into a piano voice. She also was an assistant conductor and a standing ovation for ‘Aida’ was given by the Howard University University Faculty. In 1966, Roberta Flack married and divorced Steve Novosel in 1972. Bernard Wright, a son, has become a blues rhythm player.

She is an integral part of the Artist Empowerment Coalition, which promotes artists’ right to control their creativity. She has also been the spokesperson for the American Society for Animal Cruelty Prevention. She established The Roberta Flack Music School, which offers free tuition to disadvantaged students. The Howard University made her an honorary member of Tau Beta Sigma for her outstanding work in promoting music education.


Roberta Flack was 19 years old when she was a graduate of Howard University. She was for a further education, but due to her father’s tragic death, she had to quit and take up a teaching job in North Carolina. She relocated to Washington, DC afterwards, where she taught Junior High and Junior High in Browne and Rabaut. She also began playing in Washington D.C. nightclubs during that time.

Her vocal professor Frederick ‘Wilkie’ Wilkerson recommended that she pursue a career in pop music rather than classical music. She followed the instructions of her teacher and began to get attention. She was employed in 1968 in Washington, DC to perform in Mr. Henry’s Restaurant. The local people enjoyed her singing and also people from distant cities listened to her show. Soon Les McCann jazz musician discovers her and arranges an Atlantic Records audition for her. She played 42 songs in 3 hours during the audition and was immediately signed.

Career

Her first album ‘First Take’ was recorded for Atlantic Records in February 1969 in a space of ten hours. The single “The First Time Even I Seen Your Face” from the 1971 film album, ‘Play Misty for Me’ made the song a chartbuster when filmmaker Clint Eastwood included one of its tracks. To utilise the music, he paid $2,000. She started singing duets in 1972 with Donny Hathaway, her vocalist and friend.

In 1972 the ‘The Closer I Come to You’ duets from ‘Blue Lights on the basement’ s album, both ‘Where Is the Love’ sold more than one million copies and each certified as gold. The duets were also sold in 1977. ‘The Closer I Get to You.’ In 1974, in the film ‘Huckleberry Finn,’ she sung the lead song ‘Freedom.’ She began looking for a new companion with Hathaway’s sudden death in 1979. She finally joined Peabo Bryson in 1980, an R&B and Soul vocalist.
