Freddie Aguilar Bio Data :

Freddie Aguilar is a Philippine folk musician. He is most renowned for his song Anak, the best-selling Philippine music album all time, which is the hymn of the opposition against the Marcos administration during the People’s Power Revolution of 1986. He is strongly linked to Pinoy rock. He is well recognised internationally and in the Philippines and Asia-Pacific and is renowned for being one of the best Philippine musical songwriters.

The musical beginnings of Freddie Aguilar began when he was young. Aguilar played his first guitar when he was nine years old. At the age of 19, Freddie Aguilar performed on stage for the first time alongside Joshua Alcantara. Freddie Aguilar did not complete the degree program, but did study Electrical Engineering at De Guzman Institute of Technology. He pursued music instead, becoming a street musician, then a folk club and bar musician afterwards.

Career

Aguilar divided his family and left college at the age of 18. Five years later, as he realised and regretted his mistakes, he composed the Anak song. The “Anak” of Aguilar not only broke the Phily record charts in 1979, but also reached the No. 1 position in Japan and gained significant popularity in other countries, such as Angola, Japan, Malaysia, Hong Kong and portions of Western Europe. The song was so renowned that, in some respects, it was recorded in up to 100 versions in 23 languages worldwide.

Billboard said that the song was the world hit number two in the 1980s. Since 2006, it was the highest selling record in the history of Philippine music. Even before “Bayan Ko” was released by Aguilar, Aguilar produced and performed songs aimed at societal injustices. Magdaleno’s CD includes the songs about a girl forced to prostitute because of poverty and the clashes between Christian and Muslim in Mindanao’s track. After the album, Freddie Aguilar sang in a song about the USA and Russia about the injustices endured by the powerless, poverty and the arrogance of superpowers.

Five years after “Anak” was composed, Freddie Aguilar joined the Marcos demonstrations and began to write songs criticising the government’s atrocities. Some of the songs which barred him from mainstream media include: “Kata-rungan” or “Justice” (for the unjustly accused), “Pangako” (“Promise”) (unfulfilled commitments made by leader to the abandoned people)  One of the most well-known songs of that period was his rendition of “Bayan Ko” (“My Country”), adding one verse to the original tune. Aguilar first recorded “Bayan Ko” in 1978 in a patriotic effort to “jolt back people who are beginning to forget who we really are.”

He also reproduced the song, as it is encouraging, and it gave him enthusiasm and force. Originally composed 1928 in a battle for the Philippines’ independence from US rule by Constancio de Guzmán with poet José Corazón de Jesus’ lyrics. The Marcos regime once again became the unofficial hymn of the “people” of the “people power,” the new democratic nation opposed to the authoritarianism generally credited with Ferdinand Marcos’ deposition. In 1983, the murder of Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino led to a major demonstration of the Marcos regime, while Aguilar’s rendering of “Bayan Ko” over the radio and speakers in the streets of Manila and the Philippines aboard jeepneys.

Freddie Aguilar singed “Bayan Ko” in the funeral of Senator Aquino and thought that Aquino was a man of action, giving his life even for the liberation of the Philippines. During the show, Freddie Aguilar felt no longer frightened and strong and confident. Then he also chose to join the cause. Aguilar joined other protest singers in music, street performances and anti-Marcos rallies along with the APO Hiking Society and other Pinoy pop musicians who stood out against dictatorship.

In an interview with ABS-CBN News, Aguilar noted that the song’s lyrics blend the love of the Philippines to their country, the Aquino Family and the country’s dedication. Even now, the Filipinos will recognise Bayan Ko as the national anthem of protest. Aguilar was awarded the Asia Star Award from Asia Model Award Festival in Korea on 18 January 2008. Aguilar still lives and continues to perform in the Philippines. He has now moved to his own residence, known as “Ka Freddie.”

He still enjoys considerable support in the Philippines and many Filipinos living outside the country. Aguilar advocated the construction of a new agency named the “Culture and Arts Department.” Aguilar conducted “Para sa Tunay na Pagbabago,” one of Duterte’s campaign jings with Ipaglalaban Ko, during the campaign and the opening of President Rodrigo Duterte. Aguilar is the favourite singer of President Duterte.
