The Swedish singer and songwriter is Carola Maria Häggkvist. Since the early 1980s she has been among the most successful Swedish performers, and published albums from pop and dance to hymns of folk music. Her debut album, Främling (1983), sold about 1 million copies and is still Swedish history’s largest selling album. She worked as a songwriter as well.


She has recorded many top-selling albums and singles during her career, and she is known as Sweden’s leading singer. Carola Häggkvist was born in Södersjukhuset, Stockholm, on 8 September 1966. She grew up in the south of the city of Norsborg, Sweden. When she was eight, she started to play at the Miniteaters of Stockholm; she also attended the Music School of Adolf Fredrik. In 1977, Häggkvist won a talent contest, and debuted for the first time in TV, at “Krokodilbarnets klagan” in Sveriges. For almost 20 years, Carola Haggkvist, better known as Carola, has been one of the most popular and enduring Swedish slager singers. In 1991 with the song “Fangad Av En Stormvind,” Carola was the reputation for representing Sweden in the European Union contest on multiple occasions.

In the Eurovision Song Contest, Carola represented Sweden, performing her breakout solo “Främling” (Holm/Forsberg), and finishing on #3 after Luxembourg and Isreal. She has sold over 1,000,000 of her debut album “Främling” (Mariann Music 1983) and is still the best sold album ever in Sweden. The 1983 summer tour recorded almost every stop in Sweden at the box office.

“Runaway” album (Polydor International 1986) was produced and written by the BeeGees and published in Europe. Carola had her theatrical debut with “The Music Sound” at Stockholm in 1995, for which she won the Swedish Guldmasken award at the 1996 Musical/Comedy for Best Leading Actress. In 1998 Carola delivered her Swedish voice to Moses’ sister Miriam (The Prince of Egypt/Dreamworks 1998), in Prinsen Av Egypten. In 1977, her success on local talent competition led to her entrance on Swedish national television. Carola was the Swedish music player. A few years later, she received the notice of promoter Bert Karlsson and urged her to compete at the 1982 Melodifestival contest. She refused to make an album with the Swedish metal band Standby, instead. However, in 1983 Carola was not able to resist the attraction of the song competition circuit with “Framling” (Stranger).

The song was a hit, Carola represented Sweden at the Song Contest in Eurovision. Third, she came, and a star came back to Sweden. Her debut solo album, Framling, has been on the Swedish chart for nearly 12 weeks. More albums, including a collaboration with the Bee Gees, dubbed Runaway, followed during the next seven years. Carola returned with the song “Mitt I Ett Aventyr” to Melodifestivalen in 1990 and was the second to compete. Carola never had to be satisfied with second place and came the following year to the front with “Fangad Av En Stormvind,” a win that brought her back for the second time in a decade in the Eurovision contest.

Carola and “Fangad Av In Stormvind,” after counting the number of twins and higher points, finished in first place alongside France (represented by Amina); the judges finally regarded Carola as the winner of the tournament. Over the next two years, Carola visited China and produced her first gospel album in 1993, My Tribute. During the next 15 years, there were another twelve recordings, both secular and gospel. With the song “Invincible” Carola returned to Eurovision in 2006, and finished in fourth place.
